Other Health Conditions or Diseases
The following connects to organizations about health related conditions that can happen at the same time of an acquired brain injury (ABI) or result in varying degrees of cognitive dysfunction because of the disease or condition (AIDS, cancer, epilepsy, etc.) or treatment (medications).
Examples follow:
- Someone may sustain a spinal cord injury and a brain injury in the same accident, etc.;
- If the occipital lobe is damaged it can result in vision impairment or blindness, etc.; or
- Some conditions, i.e., sleep apnea, epilepsy/seizure disorder, can be the result of a congenital or acquired brain injury or the cause of and ABI or contribute to additional brain injuries, i.e., a seizure that results in hitting your head on a hard surface or a fall from the top of a roof can result in a seizure disorder, etc.; or
- The treatment itself can contribute to cognitive dysfunction, i.e., seizure medications, medications to treat depression, etc.
